Anatomy of a Tree

This play-based unit will utilize centres or stations for indoor activities, to allow for hands on exploring of learning materials. The unit includes several outdoor lessons that allow students to learn about the anatomy of trees using directed exploration in a natural area. Students will be encouraged to explore an outdoor space with both coniferous and deciduous trees. They will be encouraged to describe and compare the shapes of different trees, the type of leaves and the bark of different trees using their senses.

SMART Outcomes

Students will learn the following skills:

  • Identify broad leaves from needle leaves,
  • Identify deciduous trees from coniferous trees,
  • Identify and label at least four parts of the tree using appropriate vocabulary,
  • Describe the function of the various parts of the tree,
  • Describe how deciduous trees change over the seasons,
  • Describe how animals and humans use trees,
  • Describe the needs of a tree as a living organism and,
  • Describe the function of at least four parts of the tree using appropriate vocabulary.
