This unit introduces early learners to the anatomy of a tree, the life cycle of a tree, seasonal changes of deciduous trees, broad leaf trees, needle leaf trees, seeds and cones.  The educational material uses examples and images of trees that are native to Manitoba, allowing early learners to begin identifying species of trees in their local environment.

Students will learn to recognize traits in trees, leaves, needles, seeds and cones and will sort them into various categories.  These skills are required for the next step: using a biological key to identify species.

This unit package includes:

  • 7 lessons,
    7 sets of flash cards,
    a Teacher’s Guide,
    a lesson planner sheet, and
    6 activity sheets

This unit aligns with the Kindergarten Manitoba curriculum Cluster 1: Trees (K-1-01, K-1-02, K-1-03, K-1-04, K-1-05, K-1-06, K-1-07, K-1-08) but is also suitable for any student that is learning to identify native species of trees in Manitoba.
